Final Stats

MILFORD, CT (January 11) - The Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team defeated the Wesleyan Cardinals by the score of 3-2 at the Milford Ice Pavilion on Tuesday night.

Both teams came out in a defensive mode in the first period with neither team creating any quality scoring chances. The Pioneers, however, would break through as time expired to take a 1-0 lead into the locker room. Sarah Turbert dropped the puck to Kathleen Cummings between the circles in the Cardinal zone. Cummings then sent a pass to Devon Gaslin who cut to the net and sent a shot past Wesleyan goaltender Meredith Katz.

The Cardinals would respond in the second when an Anna Siliciano pass sprung Amanda Nickels for a breakaway. Nickels would convert on the scoring opportunity sending a shot to the short side of Pioneer goalie Stephanie Boulay to know the score at 1-1 just 6:23 into the period.

The Pioneers took a 2-1 just 3:42 into the third period on a superb individual effort by Michelle Panella. After picking up a loose puck just inside the Wesleyan zone, Panella stick handled around a pair of defenders and deposited a shot past Katz for the go-ahead goal.

The Cardinals would respond by tying the contest just 4:08 later at the 7:50 mark on a Meghan Frederico power-play goal. Jessica Fischer and Jessica Pearce picked up assists on the goal.

With the game threatening to head into overtime, Wesleyan's Emily Titterton hooked down Jessica Felt to give the Pioneers a power play for the final 1:47. It would be Felt who would capitalize on the man-advantage as she knocked home the puck after a set up from Panella with just six seconds remaining.

Boulay finished the night with 23 saves for the Pioneers while Katz ended with 27 for the Cardinals.

The Pioneers return to action this Friday night when they play host to Castleton State. Face off is at 7:00 PM.
