NEW BRUNSWICK, ME (January 10, 2010) – The Sacred Heart University women’s ice hockey team lost to Bowdoin College, 5-2, on the road Saturday afternoon to split the weekend series. The loss dropped the Pioneers to 5-11-1 on the season, while the Polar Bears improved to 5-5-2 overall.
SHU fell behind early as Bowdoin got goals from sophomore Dominique Lozzi and freshman Kim Tess-Wanat. Pioneer junior, and leading goal scorer, Lauren Fontaine (Windsor, ON) put the Red & White on the board with just 16 seconds remaining in the first. Assisted by senior Kate Dunlop (Flesherton, ON) and junior Brittany Hartman (Prior Lake, MN), it was Fontaine’s 10th goal of the season.
Sophomore Tara Kent (Glenview, IL), assisted by Taryn Lapierre (Oakland, RI), lit the lamp six minutes into the final frame to close the gap to one goal. Sophomore Katie Herter (Topsfield, MA) and freshman Kayte Holtz (New Berlin, WI) would each tack on one more score to finish the game.
Freshman Emily Siira (Cedarburg, WI) allowed four goals and made 28 saves for Sacred Heart. In net for the Polar Bears, freshman Kayla Lessard stopped 29 shots for the win.
Sacred Heart returns to action with an afternoon game against Lindenwood at the Wonderland of Ice on January 13 at 2:00 pm.
