ORONO, ME (January 8) - The Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team was turned away by the University of Maine Black Bears despite a season high 70 saves from SHU goalie Stephanie Boulay on Saturday afternoon.
Boulay started a very busy first period as she turned away 29 of the 30 shots. Junior defenseman Morgan Janusc scored the Black Bear's lone goal of the period with assists from senior captain Tristan Desmet and junior forward Andrea Steranko. Janusc's first goal of the season came with 3:23 left in the period. Sophomore forward Amy Quirion nearly doubled the Black Bear lead when she ripped a left handed shot that hit the post and deflected wide.
Maine stayed out of the penalty box in the first period and were unable to score on their two power play opportunities. Rachel Gettings stopped all four shots she faced.
The second period of play was a mirror image of the first period. Maine had most of the possession and racked up 22 shots to Sacred Heart's two. Boulay came up with some big saves to keep the Pioneers in the game. Freshman forward Danielle Tangredi and Desmet each had their breakaways smothered by Boulay. Junior forward Cheryl White scored a great goal with 2:39 left to go in the period. Steranko skated past a defenseman, found Desmet who passed the puck across the goal mouth to a sprawling White who somehow knocked the puck into the back of the net from her stomach. The goal is White's team leading 12th of the year. Desmet and Steranko each recorded their second assist of the game. Maine found themselves in the penalty box twice but were able to kill off both penalties. Sacred Heart stayed out of the penalty box. Gettings made two saves in the period to Boulay's 21.
Quirion added two goals in the third period to double her season total to four. She scored her first goal at the 11 minute into the third period and her second at the 17:40 mark. Janusc assisted on the first goal and sophomore forward Brigitte Laflamme assisted on the second goal. With 1 minute and 29 seconds to go, Sacred Heart's Laura Falk scored with assists from Sarah Turbert and Jessica Felt for the Pioneers only goal.
