MILFORD, CT (January 4) - The Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team defeated the Saint Michael's College Purple Knights by the final score of 7-1 on Tuesday afternoon at the Milford Ice Pavilion. Sophomore Michelle Panella netted a hat trick to lead the way for SHU.

The Pioneers, who would score in bunces all night, scored three times in the span of 1:22 in the first to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Sarah Turbert scored the first SHU goal at the 13:50 mark off a feed from Devon Gaslin. Panella scored her first at the 14:22 mark before Sarah Hickman finished the fleurry at 15:28. Erin Guertin and Erin Berry picked up helpers on the Hickman goal.

The Pioneers followed up a three-goal first period with a two-goal effort in the second period, this time the goals coming just :33 apart. Katelin McLaughlin scored at the 18:48 mark with the assists going to Panella and Devon Gaslin before Panella picked up her second of the game at 19:21.

Panella would complete her hat trick 12:22 into the thrid off feeds from Jane Auxier and Rachel Mroz. Turbert would add a second goal to close out the SHU scoring.

Melissa Gagne scored the lone Purple Knight goal with just 21 seconds left in the game.

Stephanie Boulay finished the night making 19 saves and picked up an assist on Panella's second goal. The tandem of Annice Mason and Marcy Ring made 39 saves for Saint Michael's.
 

 

The Pioneers and the Knights will square off again tomorrow afternoon for a 3:00 PM face off.
