Shelton, CT-. Sacred Heart (20-9-1) will take on Franklin Pierce University for 3rd place in the NEHC Tournament Sunday after losing 5-1 to Saint Anselem's. Holy Cross blanked Franklin Pierce 3-0 in the day's first semifinal.
Before the action started the day was marked by a special hockey homecoming. Senior Teagan Ketchum was surprised by the homecoming of her brother, Trevor who was on return from Navy Tour. Trevor serves as a Petty Officer Second Class in he Navy - they had not seen each other in 14 months. The team hosted a Military Appreciation game several weeks ago and Teagan was devastated that he wasn't able to be there for the game – convincing herself that he would be.
The family arranged a flight home for Trevor to be present for the Pioneers NEHC Tournament Game on Saturday versus St. Anselm. Following the national anthem, Trevor was the surprise ceremonial puck drop, with Teagan taking the face-off for the Pioneers.
Saint Anselm jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the first period thanks to two goals from Starzyk and one from Quinn.
Sacred Heart got the only goal of the second period from Olivia Bryant on the power play with 4:36 left to cut the Hawks' deficit to two after two.
The score remained 3-1 until Saint Anselm scored twice in the final 6:31 to pull away. Martha Findley fired in a one-timer on a loose puck just inside the offensive zone at 13:29 of the third and Quinn added her second of the night with 1:21.
The Pioneers will take on Franklin Pierce in the consolation game at 1:00PM Sunday, Feb. 25.
