Portland, ME - The Sacred Heart women's hockey team was outshot 39-12 Wednesday afternoon en route to a 4-0 loss at Southern Maine. The Pioneers drop to 4-8-5 on the season, while Southern Maine improves to 7-5-1.
Southern Maine scored one goal in the first and three goals in the third period. Erin Banfield scored the Huskies first two goals, the first coming at 9:36 of the first. Banfield then struck again to begin the third period, knocking home a power play goal at 8:00 of the final frame. The senior captain was first assisted by Chelsea Boucher and then by Talya Bent on the power play.
Bridget O'Brien and Julia Pearl also both notched goals in the third period on SHU goaltender Nicole Magee (Burlington, MA). The Pioneers had just one shot on goal in the third period.
Southern Maine goalie Nia Kelly notched her second win of the season and first shutout.
Sacred Heart will play next at Holy Cross on January 17th.
