Portland, ME – Junior Melissa Robbins (Nashua, NH) scored with just a minute and 22 seconds left in regulation to force overtime as the Pioneers notched their fifth tie in ten days, 3-3, to the Southern Maine Huskies Tuesday evening. Sacred Heart is now 4-7-5 on the season.
For the third game in a row, senior goalie Alexius Schutt (Elk River, MN) made 30+ saves, this time 37 as the Pioneers were outshot by Southern Maine, 40-19.
Junior Casey Stathopoulos (Waltham, MA) put SHU on the board in the first period, putting in her team-leading 6th goal on a power play at 12:26 to give SHU a 1-0 lead. Sacred Heart's leading-scorer was assisted by Robbins and senior captain, Catie Ladner (Chaska, MN).
The Huskies responded with two consecutive goals to take a 2-1 lead. First, it was Cassandra Sherman knocking one past Schutt on a well-constructed Husky power play at 15:00 of the first period. Sherman was assisted by Katie Couture and Ally Vanidestine. After going into intermission tied at one, Southern Maine took the lead in the second period on a Lynn Kozlowski goal at 8:05. Kozlowski was assisted by Shauna Williams.
An unassisted goal by Erin Banfield put Southern Maine back on top 3-2 at 6:30 of the third period.
Sacred Heart looked headed for defeat but a Southern Maine tripping penalty at 18:19 gave the Pioneers some life. Stathopoulos and Robbins combined for the game-tying goal, with Robbins knocking home her 5th goal of the season to send the game into extra time.
Schutt made four saves in the overtime period as SHU salvaged its fifth tie of the season.
The Pioneers and Huskies are right back at it tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock.
Notes: Pioneers were 2-of-3 on the power play Tuesday night, after scoring just once on their previous 35 power play opportunities.
