BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Sacred Heart women's hockey team opened the 2013-14 season with a 4-2 win over the Rhode Island Rams on Friday night at the Wonderland of Ice. Sacred Heart starts the season 1-0 for the first time since 2006.
Sophomore Hanna Skelley (Wolfeboro, NH) opened up the scoring for the Pioneers in the first period at 14:58. Skelley found the back of the net on an assist from sophomore Heather Daley (Brewster, NY). From a tough angle on the left side of the goalmouth, Skelley snuck the puck past URI goalie Kayla DiLorenzo.SHU took a 2-0 lead on a goal by last season's leading scorer, Casey Stathopoulos (Waltham, MA), at 16:54.
In the second period, Rhode Island senior, Lauren Lanoie, cut into Sacred Heart's lead with a goal at 3:04.
Up 2-1 in the third, freshman forward Emily found a great time to score her first goal in a Pioneer uniform to put SHU up 3-1 at 7:59. All alone, Falvey beautifully finished a breakaway goal past DiLorenzo. Junior forward Alex Davis added to Sacred Heart's lead with a goal to put the Pioneers up 4-1 with three minutes left in the game.
Too little, too late for Rhode Island, sophomore Janessa Courtney scored the final goal of the game with just about 45 seconds left in regulation.
Sacred Heart and Rhode Island meet again tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 at the Wonderland.
