FAIRFIELD, Conn (July 30, 2007) - Sacred Heart University Director of Athletics C. Donald Cook announced that Matthew McGreevy has been promoted to head women's golf coach. McGreevy joined the Pioneers last season as an assistant and played a pivotal role in the success of the team including their best-ever finish at the Northeast Conference Championship.

McGreevy takes over the head coaching duties from Jamie P. Romeo, who served as the women's head coach over the past four seasons. This past season, his first with the Pioneers, McGreevy helped guide the women's team to a fourth place finish at the NEC's with junior Ali Heyes garnering all-conference honors with a 10th place finish.

The fall portion of the schedule was highlighted by sophomore Jennifer Tierney's individual victory in the Pioneer Fall Classic, the school's first-ever individual tournament title.

McGreevy, a graduate of Sacred Heart Univesity, was a two-sport athlete for the Pioneers. A quarterback on the football team, he is tied for the school record for touchdown passes in a game (4 vs. Curry 10/19/95). He was also a standout in between the pipes in lacrosse.

After graduation, McGreevy picked up the game of golf and is now currentaly a teaching professional at Great River Golf Club (www.greatrivergolfclub.com), which is the home of Pioneer Golf. McGreevy who has been teaching for eight years, heads the instruction of the junior programs at Great River.

"I'm honored to take over the program for Jamie at this very exciting time in the University's history." McGreevy stated. "We have a solid foundation to build off of and our best golf is ahead of us."

Romeo will remain with both the men's and women's teams as Director of Operations. "Matt is the right person for the job." Romeo said. "He is a solid recruiter, sound leader, and tremendous motivator, but most importantly the guy can play and teach the game."
