FAIRFIELD, CT - Sacred Heart University's Director of Golf Operations / Head Women's golf coach Jamie P. Romeo announced today that Katherine Wolpert (Lafayette, IN), Joanne Martorana (Randolph, NJ), Jillian Nery (New Bedford, MA), Jennifer Tierney (Danbury, CT) have signed National Letters of intent to attend Sacred Heart University to play for the Pioneers next season.

"This is a talented, deep recruiting class," Romeo stated. "This group makes a tremendous addition to our already strong nucleus. We are losing one senior, Susan Leventakos, and we will miss Sue a great deal for her play and leadership, but we are confident that these four dynamite student athletes are ready for the challenge."

Wolpert who plays out of Lafayette Jefferson High School has had a solid scholastic run. Couple that with solid experience playing tournaments around the state and the Pioneers feel good about their first signing out of Indiana. "There is good junior women's golf in Indiana, I'm glad that we were able to have Kate join the SHU Community, she is a great kid!" Martorana, who has been very involved in the New Jersey junior circuit, finished her scholastic playing days at Randolph High School. "Joanne has had multiple wins on the New Jersey Junior Golf Competition Circuit, she is seasoned when it comes to tournament play. We are lucky to have her."

Tierney, of Danbury High School is another accomplished player, posting a 44th place finish at the 2004 CT Women's Amateur Championship. "Besides being all FCIAC (high school conference), she is all-state and All New England as well as being honored as one of only of 25 recipients by High School Sports America for Women's Golf. This award blends, academic, athletic, and involvement in the community, everything that we ask our student athletes to do here at SHU."

Nery, who works a great deal on her game, has only been playing three years. "Jillian will not miss many fairways, couple that with an outstanding short-game and you have a solid player." Coach Romeo stated. "As we got to know Jillian throughout the process we know that she is a great student athlete who will give nothing but her best...day-in-and-day-out."

The Pioneers who are coming off their best season will be releasing their schedules and announcing captains over the next two weeks.
