MILFORD, Conn. (October 27, 2008) - The Sacred Heart women's golf team closed out the fall portion of their schedule in style Monday afternoon, taking home the team and individual titles at their own Fall Classic Tournament at the Great River Golf Club. Freshman Carly Bergin (Binghamton, NY) won her first collegiate tournament by firing a 154 for a two-stroke win while leading the Pioneers to a 16-stroke victory over the field.
The Pioneers took a 12-stroke lead after Sunday's round and added to it by shooting a team score of 639 (318-321) to best the field of nine teams for their first-ever win at the SHU Fall Classic. Brown finished second with a score of 655 while Boston University took third at 668.
Bergin, who came into this week's final tournament on the heels of a second place finish at the Fairleigh Dickinson Invitational, shot the low round of the day carding a 75 on the par 72, 5,917 yard course. Bergin's score of 79 on Sunday afternoon had her tied for third place after the first round as the freshman golfer responded on Monday to take home the title.
SHU claimed three of the top-five spots in the tournament as senior Joanne Martorana (Randolph, NJ) took home third place and freshman Michelle Riber (Stockholm, Sweeden) finished fourth. Martorana, the round one leader, shot an 82 on Monday to finish with a 158. Riber had the best finish of her young career with an 81 on Monday to come in at 159 for the tournament.
The Pioneer's fourth and fifth golfers, seniors Jennifer Tierney (Danbury, CT) and Katherine Wolpert (Lafayette, IN) both finished in the top-20. Tierney's two-round score of 168 (85-83) was good for a 14th place tie while Wolpert's 173 (88-85) placed her tied for 19th.
Sacred Heart fielded a second team in the tournament and that was led by senior Jillian Nery (New Bedford, MA) who finished tied for 16th with a score of 169 (87-82). The SHU "B" team shot a team score of 727.
