Bethpage, NY - Bethpage State Park's "Red Course", which runs alongside the historic "Black Course" which hosted the 2002 US Open, is where the Pioneers looked to take another step forward in Division I Women's Golf in the Northeast. The par 70, 6,206-yard layout was a formidable foe for the young team.
Ali Heyes, (Dunrobin, Ontario) continued to play her steady game, posting scores of 87, 87, which were good for an individual 16th place finish as the Pioneers finished sixth out of seven teams in the annual invitational. "Too many scores in the nineties." Coach Jamie P. Romeo stated, "we need five scores routinely in the 80's and hope that one of our kids goes low, I'm very optimistic that this group can get it done."
The Pioneers, who have a plan this year to be a regular sub 700 team in the two-day tournament format, have improved their stroke average by more than 10% this year. Last year at the 2004 Conference Championship, the Pioneers shot 794 over the two-day event. Their low this fall, a 714 at the Central Connecticut State University Invite, which is an improvement over 10% from last years NEC Conference Tournament results.
"We have come a long way in a short period of time, but, we have a great deal of work to do," Freshman Ali Heyes said. "We are committed to the game-plan that has been laid out for us by Coach Romeo, he stresses that we need to have five scores consistently in the 80's and that's just 5% more as a team. We are going to get there this year and then re-adjust our goals from there."
The Pioneers have added a late event to the schedule, where they will travel to Staten Island to play at the Wagner College Invite, hosted by the Richmond County Country Club. The event will take place on the 28th of October.
