CCSU Invitational Final Results

FAIRFIELD, CT - Sacred Heart University's Director of Golf Operations / Women's Head Coach Jamie P. Romeo continues to tweak a roster of eleven to find the right chemistry which will help propel the Pioneers into the top of the Northeast Conference standings.

For the CCSU Invitational, played at Stanley Golf Course, playing as a par 72 and a shade over 5800 yards, Romeo decided to go with a lineup that featured two juniors (co-captains) Kathleen Cummings and Ashleigh O'Rourke, along with sophomore Lauren Foster and Freshmen Jennifer Tierney and Jillian Nery. The team total of 349, which ties the low for the year featured a pair of 83's by Foster and Cummings, an 87 by Tierney and the last score posted was a 96, which was shot by both O'Rourke and Tierney (Division I Golf has five players and posts the four lowest scores).

Romeo can't help but smirk as he walks around watching the program mature. "We have had three kids this year already shoot in the low 80's...Cummings, Heyes, Foster and three others who have fired just a shade over the mid-80's...Martorana , Tierney, and Wolpert ." Coach stated. "I'm anxious for us to take the next step...the kids work hard are buy into putting the program first...putting aside egos!"

The Pioneers depth is impressive...with most programs working with four or five golfers, the Pioneers feature eight who have already made the lineup and three others who have seasoned experience. "Our depth has been an asset to us this year." Co-Captain Kathleen Cummings stated. "Coach Romeo always stresses us to play Pioneer Golf...a good, brisk pace of play, be prepared and ready to play, and grind it out when things are not going our way."

The Pioneers return to action heading to Lehigh's Don Mershon Invite, which will be held in Telford, PA. "This is a good stretch of golf for us." Co-Captain Ashleigh O'Rourke said. " When you have depth, can mix the roster so everyone gets a shot and we can keep the group fresh...it's also important for us to remember that this is not a sprint but a marathon...we just need to get better everyday to position us for the NEC Championship in April."
