Pioneers Finish 3rd at NEC's; Martorana & Tierney in the Top-10

2009 NEC Championship Final Results

HERSHEY, Pa. (April 24, 2009) - The Sacred Heart women's golf team posted a team score of 313 for the second-straight day as the Pioneers finished third at the 2009 Northeast Conference Championship at the Hershey Links golf course. Seniors Joanne Martorana (Randolph, NJ) and Jennifer Tierney (Danbury, CT) both finished in the top-10 to earn All-NEC honors while head coach Matt McGreevy was named NEC Coach of the Year by his peers.

Sacred Heart entered the final day of competition on Sunday in second place, trailing Fairleigh Dickinson. The Knights won their second-straight NEC title after posting a three-day score of 920. SHU matched their day two score of 313 and finished the event with a team score of 945. The Long Island Blackbirds shot the low team score on Sunday, firing a 306 to pass the Pioneers for second place with a 943.

Martorana tied for fifth overall thanks to a 76 on Sunday. She carded matching 78's on Friday and Saturday and finished the tournament with a score of 232. Tierney shot Sacred Heart's low score on Sunday, firing a 76. Martorana improved on her 13th place finish in 2008. Tierney improved on each day of the tournament and finished with a score of 238 (82-80-76) to tie for 10th overall. Tierney earns all-conference recognition for the second-straight season. She finished tied for seventh at last year's event.

SHU freshman Carly Bergin (Binghamton, NY) finished tied for 13th overall shooting 242 (84-78-80) over the three days. Pioneer senior Jillian Nery () and freshman Michelle Riber (Stockholm, Sweden) both tied for 15th overall, shooting 243's. Nery shot rounds of 79, 77, and 87 while Riber posted rounds of 80, 82 and 81.
