Pioneers Shutout by Undefeated Rider

FAIRFIELD, CT (October 4, 2009) – The Sacred Heart University field hockey team lost its Northeast Conference season opener 3-0 against Rider University at Campus Field Sunday afternoon.  The loss dropped the Pioneers to 1-10 overall and 0-1 in the NEC, while the win keeps the Broncs undefeated at 10-0 and 1-0.

Rider opened the scoring with a goal by freshman Marlaine Schneider in the 24th minute off of a penalty corner by junior Margaret Ecke and assisted by sophomore Virginia Equsquiza.  Sophomore forward Megan Pisani scored twice for the Broncs to add to her season total of 13 goals.


Junior goalkeeper Kim Stow (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) stopped a season-high 22 shots in the cage for Sacred Heart.  Rider senior Lyndsie Johnson made no saves to record her sixth shutout of the season.


The Pioneers were outshot by the Broncs 35-2.


Sacred Heart returns to action Friday at 4:00 at Quinnipiac.
