Final Stats

New Haven, CT - Yale sophomore forward Ashley McCauley scored four goals and tacked on an assist to lead the Bulldogs past Sacred Heart 5-2, in field hockey action Sunday at Johnson Field.

It was actually an assist that got McCauley's big day started. The Pioneers had a shot hit the post four minutes in, followed by a save from Yale sophomore goalkeeper Charlotte Goins. A defensive save by the Pioneers kept Yale off the board two minutes after that, but the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead when McCauley fed senior forward Cat Lindroth at 10:15.

Sacred Heart goalkeeper Kristen McIntire (Avon, CT) was able to stop McCauley during a fast break three minutes after that, then made a diving save on a shot from senior back Beth Raveche on a corner.

McCauley then made a quick difference in the game by scoring twice in a span of under three minutes, including one assisted by a nice cross from senior forward/midfielder Harriet Thayer.

Sacred Heart (2-8) fought back with a goal from Carisa Eye (Nesconset, NY) with 11:36 left in the first half, ending Goins' scoreless streak at 182:06.

The Bulldogs regained their offensive momentum early in the second half after three straight corners by Sacred Heart. Yale (4-5) drew four corners within a three-minute span, and while none of those led to goals it did signify a swing in momentum.

McCauley then broke through for two goals in 42 seconds. On the first, she knocked a rebound past McIntire at 51:50, leading to a Sacred Heart timeout. Lindroth then took the pass back and drove the left side of the field before setting up McCauley for a 5-1 lead.

Katie Bohren (Hopwell Junction, NY) added a goal for the Pioneers with 14:28 to play, but that was the last significant threat to the Bulldogs' lead. Goins finished with eight saves while McIntire made 14.

The Pioneers are back in action Sunday when they visit Saint Francis (PA) in Northeast Conference action. Game time is 12:00 pm.
