Fairfield, CT - Junior Roz Ellis scored two goals and sophomore Tricia Deans added a goal and an assist as No. 4 Iowa defeated Sacred Heart, 6-0, in field hockey action Saturday afternoon at Fairfield's University Field.
The Hawkeyes dominated play for much of the day, out-shooting the Pioneers 30-7 for the game. Junior Kristen McIntire (Avon, CT) made 17 saves for the Pioneers in goal to keep the game close for awhile.
Iowa got started early, as junior Lindsey Duffy converted on a penalty corner attempt in the sixth minute. Dean and Caroline Blaum provided the assists.
Dean scored her goal in the 26th minute when she received a pass from Sarah Pergine in the middle of the circle and whacked a shot past McIntire. Ellis and Blaum hooked up again off a corner attempt with under two minutes left in the first half.
Iowa scored two goals in a three minute span in the second half to blow the game open. At the 45:38 mark, Adrienne Dybus found Caitlin McCurdy with a pass and McCurdy ripped a shot to the back of the cage. Less then three minutes later Ellis tallied her second goal of the day on a rebound to make it 5-0 in favor of the Hawkeyes. Katie Noughton closed out the scoring with seven minutes left in the game.
The Pioneers are back in action Sunday September 23rd when they host Lock Haven in their home opener at Campus Field. Game time is 12:00 pm.
