With the 2018 field hockey season set to begin on Saturday, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced its preseason Coaches' Poll and Preseason All-MAAC Team on Tuesday. Sacred Heart University sophomore Bridget LaRiccia (Denville, N.J.) was the lone Pioneer selected to the preseason team.
The Pioneers received 15 points in the poll, which placed them fifth in the poll of the leagues six head coaches. Monmouth received three first place votes and 33 points to be tabbed as the preseason favorite. Fairfield, 32 points, earned three first place vote to settle in second on the list, followed by Bryant (18) and Rider (17), LIU Brooklyn earned 11 points to be tabbed sixth in the poll.
LaRiccia, a Mount St. Dominic Academy graduate, earned All-MAAC Second Team honors as a freshman. As a rookie, she appeared in 19 games and scored four goals on the season, including the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over Lehigh on September 3.
SHU begins the 2018 season with a two-game road trip. The season opener comes August 25 when the Pioneers travel to Lehigh to take on Lock Haven for a 5 p.m. game. The 2018 Pioneer home opener is September 8 versus Albany at 1 p.m. The Pioneers play their home games at Johnson Field on the campus of Yale University.
