With the 2017 field hockey season set to begin on Friday, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced its preseason Coaches' Poll and Preseason All-MAAC Team on Tuesday. Sacred Heart University senior Nichole Tolli (Poughquag, N.Y.) was the lone unanimous selection to the preseason team.
The Pioneers received 20 points in the poll, which placed them fifth in the poll of the leagues seven head coaches. Monmouth received six first place votes and 48 points to be tabbed as the preseason favorite. Fairfield, 40 points, earned one first place vote to settle in second on the list, followed by Rider (35) and Bryant (29), Siena earned 14 points to be tabbed sixth in the poll and LIU Brooklyn received 10 points.
Tolli, an Arlington High School graduate, is a three-time All-MAAC Second Team selection. She has started all 49 games she has played the past three seasons, tallying 18 total points. She scored four times as a junior, including her first career game-winning goal, to go along with two assists.
SHU begins the 2017 season with a three-game road trip. The season opener comes August 25 when the Pioneers travel to Lock Haven for a 4 p.m. game. The 2017 Pioneer home opener is September 3 versus Lehigh at 4:30 p.m. The Pioneers play their home games at Johnson Field on the campus of Yale University.
