Field Hockey Downed by Robert Morris 1-0 in Double Overtime Battle
FAIRFIELD, CONN. (October 20, 2013)—The Sacred Heart field hockey team fell to Robert Morris 1-0 in a double overtime battle Sunday afternoon on Campus Field. The Pioneers were outshot 17-14 as they drop to 4-9 on the season and 0-2 in MAAC competition.
The two teams struggled to find offense in the first and second half. Sacred Heart controlled play in the first overtime period. However with ample opportunities, the Pioneers could not score a goal sending the game into its second overtime period.
With the Pioneers in control of the ball in their own territory, Jess Martin-Brown stole the ball at the top of the circle and dished it over to Julianne Alspaugh who was right in front of the goal. In the 86th minute of the game, Alspaugh knocked the ball past SHU goalkeep Mary Altepeter (Chesterfield, Mo.) for the game-winner.
Sacred Heart heads to New Jersey next weekend to take on two MAAC opponents. On Friday, they'll face the Hawks of Monmouth University, and on Sunday will do battle with reigning champs Rider.
