FAIRFIELD, CT (October 4, 2013) - Sacred Heart r-sophomore Liz Bergman (Blandon, PA) scored the game-winning goal 3:32 into the second overtime to deliver the Pioneers a 2-1 win over visiting Lehigh University Friday night on Campus Field. The win snaps a SHU four-game losing skid and improves the Pioneers to 4-6 on the season.
SHU freshman Danielle Gallagher (Clayton, DE) scored the Pioneers' first goal of the night and picked up the assist on Bergman's game-winner. Sophomore goalkeeper Mary Altepeter (Chesterfield, MO) made 11 saves on her way to the win.
The two teams struggled to find offense in the first half, combining for a total of five shots over the first 35 minutes. The second half and overtime was a different story all together as Lehigh held a 17-16 edge on shots.
The Mountain Hawks (2-9) broke the scoreless tie in the 37th minute when Caitlyn Mitchell converted on a penalty stroke. The Pioneers got the game even in the 59th minute of action as Gallagher put home a shot off a rebound on the right side.
In the first overtime, Lehigh got off a pair of shots, one from Amanda Granger and another from Marissa Glatt but Altepeter turned both away to help send the game to a second extra session.
In the second overtime, the Pioneers struck quickly with Bergman finishing off a feed from Gallagher right at the goal mouth to send Sacred Heart home with a 2-1 win.
The Pioneers are right back at home on Sunday afternoon when they face Lock Haven at 1:00 pm.
