Three Pioneers Named All-Northeast Fencing Conference
April 7, 2010
FAIRFIELD, CT - Freshman Elena Tringa, senior captain Krista Bacci, and freshman Jayme Smith have been named to the Northeast Fencing Conference All League teams. Tringa was named first team in saber while Bacci was second team in saber and Smith second team in foil.
All-league selections are determined by the highest winning percentages of fencers that have competed in a minimum of 2/3 of possible bouts for their respective weapons. Tringa posted a 31-5 record with a plus 94 indicator (touches scored - touches received). This gave her the third best record in conference saber action this season. Krista Bacci was 30-6 with a plus 91 indicator and had the fifth best record. This is the fourth time that Bacci has been named to the All League team, having been a first team selection each of her first three seasons. Sacred Heart University has had at least one first team saber selection in last four years.
"Saber was the most competitive weapon in the Conference this year and having both Tringa and Bacci make all league was a great accomplishment," commented head coach Dr. Thomas Vrabel. "The dominance of our saber squad was the reason why were were able to go 9-3 in league play this year. I look for Elena to continue the tradition of Pioneer excellence in saber that was started by Krista four year's ago."
The third all league selection was Jayme Smith, who went 30-6 in foil this year with a plus 85 indicator and placed her fifth in the league. "I am very excited about Jayme's success this year", comments Dr Vrabel. "Smith, along with Bacci and Tringa, gave us eight to nine wins in most matches. The success of this trio was essential to our winning this year. I look forward to Jayme having an even better performance next year."
