HOBOKEN, NJ - Freshman foilist Joanne Siskidis led a furious comeback against Stevens Tech to secure women's fencing's first ten-win season with a 15-12 victory on Sunday. Down 6-3 after the first round and 11-7 after two rounds, the team took eight out of nine in the final stanza to obtain the victory.
"JoAnne did a great job today," comments head coach Dr. Tom Vrabel. "Not only did she dominate her bouts in going 3-0, but she provided critical leadership to the foil squad that helped sophomores Casey Zimmermann and Jen Wysocki post crucial wins in the third round. This was by far the best outing this year for a very young foil squad".
In addition to the strong performance from foil, the saber squad once again led the way with an 8-1 performance. The squad was led by sophomore squad captain Krista Bacci and ever improving freshman Kayla Cronin, who both were a perfect 3-0 on the day.
"Kayla's emergence has been amazing this year," said Vrabel. "We knew that Kayla would be a strong performer, but her rapid development has been the biggest surprise of the season. And Krista Bacci just continues to dominate - she only had one touch scored against her all day. I look for big things from Krista next week as we close out conference play."
The team travels to Wellesley on Saturday to conclude the conference schedule with seven matches beginning at 9 AM.
