POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Sacred Heart women's fencing team opened their 2013-2014 dual match season on Saturday, November 9th with eight contests at the Vassar Invitational. Sacred Heart defeated Vassar 20-7, Stevens Tech 18-9, FDU 16-11, CCNY 23-4, Yeshiva 23-4 and Hunter College 27-0. The only loss of the day was to Cornell 17-10.
The freshman saber tandem of Julia Greene (21-0) and Taylor Walsh (19-1) powered the saber squad to a 55-11 day. Foil (46-23) was paced by Big One bronze medalist CJ McCarter who went 16-5. Epee had a 53-19 record and was led by Natalie Rossetti and Mia Volpe who both notched eighteen wins on the day.
"This was a great start to the season," commented head coach Dr. Thomas Vrabel. "Julia Greene and Taylor Walsh had a major impact for us in saber. We now are solid in all three weapons. CJ McCarter is doing a great job taking over the A strip in foil and the other foil starters are healthy and doing well. Mia Volpe's game has matured and she has taken right over from Colleen Mason who graduated. Despite our success, we see that against the elite level teams like Cornell we still have a ways to go, but I expect us to continue to improve as the season progresses. We will do our best to be ready for next Saturday at Brown".
The Pioneers are back in action at Brown University on Saturday, November 16 for the first date of Northeast Fencing Conference competition where their opponents include perennial contenders Brown, MIT and Brandeis. Action begins at 10:00 AM.
