  • Dr. Tom Vrabel Named USFCA Fencing Coach of the Year

    The United States Fencing Coaches Association has chosen Sacred Heart Head Fencing Coach Dr. Thomas Vrabel as the 2014 Collegiate Varsity Coach of the Year. In his ninth season as the Pioneers head fencing coach, Dr. Vrabel led the team to an 11th-place finish at the NCAA Fencing Championship this past year.

    The Sacred Heart fencing team wrapped up the second day of competition at the NCAA Championships Friday where it finished Thursday, as the duo of Julia Greene (Califon, N.J.) and Megan Floyd (Media, Pa.) won five bouts to keep the Pioneers in 17th place in the team competition.

    The Sacred Heart women’s fencing team travelled to the University of Philadelphia on Sunday, where they went 2-3 in the Philadelphia Invitational. The Pioneers defeated North Carolina 14-13 and Fairleigh Dickinson 18-9 while losing to Duke 14-13, Northwestern 16-11, and the hosts Penn 20-7.

  • Pioneers Post Win Over NYU at Tradition Tournament as Taylor Walsh Leads Team with Nine Victories

    The Sacred Heart women’ s fencing team hosted Princeton, Penn State, Harvard, NYU and Temple at the 2013 Tradition Tournament at SHU’s Pitt Center on Sunday. Sacred Heart earned an important win over NYU 15-12 while falling to Temple 15-12, Penn State 21-6, Harvard 23-4 and Princeton 24-3. The Pioneers were led on the day by the youth movement of freshmen saber stars Taylor Walsh (9-6), and Julia Greene (8-7) and sophomore epeeist Mia Volpe (8-7).
  • Caitlin Stanton To Join SHU Fencing In 2014-15

    Sacred Heart University Head Fencing Coach Dr. Thomas Vrabel has announced the signing of Caitlin Stanton to a National Letter of Intent to fence epee for the Pioneers next season. Stanton is from Alpharetta, Ga. where she is the team captain of the Alpharetta High School fencing team.
  • Women’s Fencing Goes 5-1 in Opening Day in Northeast Fencing Conference Action

    The Sacred Heart women’s fencing team travelled to Brown University on Saturday for the first weekend of Northeast Fencing Conference action for the season. Led by a 46-8 performance by the epee squad, Sacred Heart defeated Brandeis 14-13, University of New Hampshire 24-3, MIT 15-12, Boston University 26-1 and Wellesley College 26-1 before losing to Brown 14-13 in the day’s finale.
  • Women’s Fencing Goes 6-1 At Vassar Invitational

    The Sacred Heart women’s fencing team opened their 2013-2014 dual match season on Saturday, November 9th with eight contests at the Vassar Invitational. Sacred Heart defeated Vassar 20-7, Stevens Tech 18-9, FDU 16-11, CCNY 23-4, Yeshiva 23-4 and Hunter College 27-0. The only loss of the day was to Cornell 17-10.
  • Megan Floyd Earns Silver Medal at 2013 BIG ONE Tournament

    The 2013 BIG ONE Intercollegiate Fencing Tournament was held at Smith College on Saturday with almost 500 fencers competing. Junior epeeist Megan Floyd (Media, Pa.) was the silver medalist and sophomore CJ McCarter (Piedmont, S.C.) was the bronze medalist in foil.
  • Women’s Fencing Announces Class of 2017

    Sacred Heart Women’s Fencing Head Coach Dr. Thomas Vrabel announced on Wednesday four spring signing period fencers who will be joining the Pioneers for the 2013-2014 season. Taylor Walsh, Carly Glowacky, Julia Cupolo and Samantha O’Brien will be joining fall signing period sabreist Julia Greene to compose the women’s fencing class of 2017.
