SHU Fencing To Compete At NCAA Northeast Regional Sunday
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart Fencing teams will compete at the 2013 NCAA Northeast Regional this Sunday, hosted by St. John's University. The regional will be aired on ESPN3 beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Last season, the men's and women's teams combined to send three fencers to the NCAA Championships at Ohio State. Marty Williams placed second in saber and Stuart Holmes finished fourth in foil, becoming the first male foilist at Sacred Heart to qualify for the NCAAs. Megan Floyd qualified for the women's team in epee.
Nine women's fencers will compete on Sunday, led by the epee squad of Floyd, Natalie Rossetti, and Colleen Mason that finished fifth at the National Collegiate Squad Championships at Ohio State on Feb. 24. Tess Kallmeyer, Charley McCarter and Aileen Trella will compete in foil with Elena Tringa and Lauren Cebello participating in the saber competition.
The men's team will send 10 fencer to Queens for Sunday's regional, fresh off their fourth consecutive NFC title last weekend. Holmes leads a foil contingent that includes Andrew Holmes, Jon Jacovino, and Alex Harwood. The Holmes' and Jacovino finished second at the National Collegiate Squad Championships, as did the epee trio of Jeremiah German, Kevin Almerini, and Michael Fenech. Those three, along with Kris White, will represent the Pioneers in epee with Tom Gerrity and Ryan O'Halloran participating in saber.
