FAIRFIELD, CT - Sacred Heart University's Varsity Equestrian team will be up and riding just days after students arrive on campus. On September 7th interested athletes should attend the team's information session to be held at the William H. Pitt Center where they will receive a tryout schedule.

"We are looking for competition -- worthy riders. We will help them with instruction, but they need to be pretty competent and ready to go," says head coach Sloane Milstein said.

Athletes will compete for a position in one of four areas of English and Western disciplines.

In the English riding discipline, Sacred Heart will compete in hunter equitation and equitation over fences. Hunter equitation events judge the rider's form, basic skill level and ability to ride with the proper English technique. Equitation over fences involves a jumping course that measures the skill of the rider and their control of the horse.

Sacred Heart will compete in reining and Western horsemanship in the Western riding discipline. Western horsemanship events are similar to hunter equitation, but judge the rider's competence in the Western discipline. Reining events emphasize the rider's total control of the horse through the execution of a pattern assigned by a judge.

Fitness tryouts will be held at the William H. Pitt Center on the Sacred Heart University's campus, while the riding portion will be held on Lion Hill Farm in Easton, CT. Tryouts will run for two weeks with an intersquad competition and a multiple choice written testing of the rules to be held on Friday September 21 to determine the final team roster. Attitude and willingness to be a "team player" is equally as important as your skill level.

There are seven returning members from the 06-07 season, and Coach Milstein expects up to 20 to attend tryouts. Participants should come prepared to run a 5k, have their medical forms completed, NCAA Clearing House done and Intercollegiate Horse Show Association placement paperwork filled out when they arrive for tryouts.
