March 9, 2009

EASTON, CT - The Sacred Heart equestrian team closed out its regular season competition this weekend by defeating the University of South Dakota in the English portion of a varsity meet. Sophomore Julie Law was the judge's choice for best in jumping, while freshman Adrianna Dattoli was chosen for Flats.

South Dakota captured the Western riding portion of the event.

On Sunday with the return of Abbie Britton from an injury, the Pioneers also had enough riders to enter the Team portion for Sunday's IHSA competition and finished 2nd overall taking the Reserve Champion (Yale, Fairfield, NYU, Columbia, Hofstra, Dowling, Stoneybrook, Molloy, St. Joes, Nassau, and CW Post also competed).

Birtton had has now recovered from a first-semester accident when a horse flipped over on her. She started riding again in January and took 2nd in the Open Jumping and 6th in the Open Flat.

Casey Marino took first in Intermediate Over Fences portion, qualifying her for Regionals in that event. Brian Buchanan and Julie Law both took sixth place in their Intermediate Flat portion. This earned Law the final point needed for her Regional Qualifier as well.

In the Novice Division, Law took first over fences, with Dattoli taking first on the Flat and Alyssa Wornonik taking a third place. In the Advanced Walk Trot Canter Division, Nicole D'Agastino took a second place. Sarah Aquilla, in her first showing in the division, took a respectable fourth, while Ali Bredehorst took a fifth to finish the day in the Beginner Walk Trot Division.
