N. ARLINGTON, NJ - The Sacred Heart women's bowling team, ranked seventh in the NTCA national pre-season poll, went 4-1 at its first date of competition in the 2007-08 season in the North East Collegiate Women's Bowling Conference.
The Pioneers started the day with a narrow 931-916 loss to St. Francis College of Brooklyn. In match two, senior Amanda Lulu led the team with a 245 game for a 951-804 win over St. Peter's College.
The big result of the day came in match three with an upset win over third-ranked Fairleigh Dickinson, 1000-924. Junior Jamie Manzo led the team with a 215 game, followed by a 205 by Marissa Gagliardi and a 202 by Lulu.
Freshman Sarah Pelletier came through big in match four with a 258, which was the high game of tournament, in a 989-911 victory over Adelphi University. She added a 234 in match five, while freshman Katy Edsall came in off the bench with 245 to give the keglers an easy win over sixth-ranked New Jersey City University.
The Pioneers fine bowling put them in first place after one NECWBC meet. Their 5-game total of 4890 was high for the meet, well ahead of the 4696 posted by NJCU. Lulu led the team with 1017 overall for a 203.4 average, followed by Jamie Smith at 189.0. Pelletier averaged 225.6 for three matches and Edsall 245 for one match.
The Pioneers are also leading the newly-reorganized Junior Varsity division after going undefeated in five matches. Edsall led the team averaging 204.0 for four matches before moving to varsity while Danielle Cocks averaged 192.6. Their victories included matches against Fairleigh Dickinson (910-888 and 912-798), Adelphi (836-789 and 843-656), and New Jersey City University (896-859).
