The Sacred Heart women's bowling team defeated St. Francis (NY) and Saint Peter's this afternoon to advance into the semifinals of the Northeast Conference tournament. The Pioneers entered as the #6 seed before knocking off the third and seventh seeds in the double elimination format. SHU takes on #2 Kutztown (2-1) to open play tomorrow as they search for the programs first NEC crown.
The Pioneers stormed out of the gates this morning sweeping #3 St. Francis (NY) 4-0 in the best of seven baker game match. SHU downed the Terriers with scores of 177-173, 212-203, 189-169, and 180-171. The top seed entering the tournament was New Jersey City but after winning their opening match they dropped two straight to be eliminated, the last defeat came at the hands of Kutztown.
Sacred Heart's match against Saint Peter's, who upset #2 seed in Kutztown in the opening round, came down to the wire as SHU came out victorious 4 - 3.5, an extra game was needed due to a tie. The Pioneers blew out Saint Peter's 194-126 in the first game before a 189 deadlock brought the tally to 1.5 - .5. SHU used 192-172 and 170-167 victories to come within one game of the win. However, the Peahens won three straight to force a deciding eighth game. Sacred Heart would come away with the crucial victory to remain one of the two remaining undefeated teams along with defending champion Fairleigh Dickinson.
The semifinals are set for tomorrow with #6 Sacred Heart (2-0) to take on #2 Kutztown (2-1) and #4 Adelphi (2-1) squaring off with #5 Fairleigh Dickinson (2-0). The semifinal games will have a rematch if a team is not eliminated, until a championship match is set. The championship match is set for 2:00 pm and will also be a best of seven baker format.
