SHU Bowling Earns Bid to USBC National Championship

ALLENTOWN, PA (March 17, 2014)—Amongst a field of nationally ranked teams, the Sacred Heart bowling team finished second at the 2014 xBowling Intercollegiate Team Championships Sectional qualifier in Allentown, Pa. this past weekend earning a bid to the Championship in Reno, Nev. April 16-18. Nicole Trudell (Coventry, R.I.) led the Pioneers overall averaging 20.99 pins per frame in the total pinfall tournament.

"I am incredibly proud of how well the team bowled this weekend," said Head Coach Becky Kregling. "Sunday was our best performance of the year. It proved they could really compete with the top teams in the country."

Sacred Heart started off rocky finishing Saturday in ninth place, but turned it around and had arguably its best day of the season on Sunday. Tallying 3,342 over 16 baker games in Sunday's morning block, the Pioneers jumped to third place in the overall standings and were just 23 pins away from claiming second place. Amanda Tyrrell (Selden, N.Y.) led the team averaging 22.53 pins per frame, while sophomore Katelyn Wilson (Dighton, Mass.) recorded 66% of her balls for strikes.

The Pioneers tossed four consecutive 200+ games to close out competition in Sunday's afternoon block, providing the final push SHU needed to sail into second place. This marks the first time this season that Sacred Heart bested defending USBC National Champion UMES, who finished third, in a total pinfall tournament.

This coming weekend, Sacred Heart heads to Altoona, Pa. to compete for its third Northeast Conference Championship.
