FAIRFIELD, Conn. (December 14, 2009) - Sacred Heart sophomore Callan Taylor (Overland Park, KS) was named the Choice Hotels Northeast Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week announced by the league office Monday afternoon. It is Taylor's first NEC Player of the Week nod this season.
Taylor turned in two double-doubles, her fourth and fifth of the season, to help Sacred Heart to a pair of wins over regional rivals from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The sophomore forward averaged 21.0 points, 12.0 rebounds, and 3.0 steals per game while shooting 54.8 percent from the field. The 6-foot-1 Kansas native poured in a career-high 32 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to sink Saint Peter's in the first of two road games on the week. On the way to producing the highest single-game scoring total the NEC has seen this season, she made 12 of 16 field goal attempts in the 61-55 win. Feeling it from the start, she scored four of Sacred Heart's first five buckets and assisted on the other in staking the Pioneers to a 10-4 lead over the Peahens 5:13 into the game. Facing a MAAC member for the third time this season, Taylor put up 10 points and 10 rebounds in a 19-point victory at cross-town rival Fairfield. Taylor started strong against the Stags as well, making two shots within the first two minutes of the contest. The Pioneers did not relinquish the lead after her layup put them ahead 4-2 with 18:06 remaining in the opening half. Taylor also logged three steals and one block in each of the two wins.
The Pioneers are off this week and back in action on Monday, December 21st traveling to Binghamton University.
