FAIRFIELD, Conn. (October 30, 2009) - Sacred Heart junior guard Alisa Apo (Freehold, NJ) was named an honorable mention to the 2009-10 Full Court Press Preseason Mid-Major Top-25 players to watch list. Apo, the 2009 Northeast Conference Player of the Year, leads the Pioneers in her third season in the Red & White as they look to defend the NEC title this year.
Apo's first two seasons in a Pioneer uniform have been among the best in Sacred Heart history and the Northeast Conference. Apo becames only the second player in NEC history, joining Jess Zinobile of Saint Francis (PA), to follow up her NEC Rookie of the Year selection by winning the league's Player of the Year award the very next season. Apo garnered first-team All-NEC honors in leading SHU to their second conference championship and trip to the NCAA Tournament.
She led the team in scoring at 16.9 points per game and dished out 135 assists last year and was one the NEC's top three-point threats, hitting 38.5% (60-156) from behind the arc. She set a new school record in 2008-09 at the free throw line hitting 83.2% (153-184) and she is currently the Pioneer's career free throw percentage leader (.808).
This season, she was named a team captain along with teammate Maggie Cosgrove (Andover, MA) as they two along with the rest of the Pioneers continue to prepare for the season opener on Friday, November 16th at Columbia.
