FAIRFIELD, Conn. (June 25, 2007) - Sacred Heart women's basketball coach Ed Swanson announced the schedule for the upcoming 2007-08 season with the Pioneers gunning for their seventh-straight winning campaign and another trip to the Northeast Conference Tournament.
The Pioneers, coming off a 22-10 record last season where they won their second-straight NEC regular season title with a 15-3 mark, claiming a share of the crown. Eleven non-conference games will prepare SHU for the rigors of an 18-game league slate for the Pioneers.
The season tips-off on Friday, November 9th at the University of Rhode Island as Sacred Heart embarks on a new era for the program. For the first time in the last four years, the Pioneers will take the court without the services of the program's all-time leading scorer Amanda Pape. Add to that the graduation of starters Jasmine Walker and Kerri Burke along with Mary Rush, the Pioneers will have a new look in 2007-08.
The non-conference schedule has a real 'Northeast' feel to it this season with 10 of the 11 opponents coming from the region. The Pioneers will take on the America East Conference and Ivy League three times apiece while taking on the Atlantic-10 on two dates in 2007-08
Returning starters, senior guard Lisa Moray (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) and junior center Kaitlin Sowinski (Hopkinton, R.I.) will lead the Pionners into the season opener with the URI. SHU takes on the Rams for the first time since the 1998-99 season, a 69-66 Rhode Island win. Stony Brook is next up on November 14th before the first Division I meeting between SHU and their cross-town rival Fairfield University. The game is scheduled for a 4:30 pm start at the Arena at Harbor Yard with both school's men's teams finishing the double header at 7 pm.
