Pioneers Name Alisa Apo and Maggie Cosgrove Team Captains
May 5, 2009
FAIRFIELD, Conn. (May 5, 2009) - Sacred Heart University juniors Alisa Apo (Freehold, NJ) and Maggie Cosgrove (Andover, MA) were named team captains of the women's basketball team for the 2009-10 season announced by head coach Ed Swanson. For the first time in Coach Swanson's tenure a pair of juniors will serve as team captains. Former Pioneer Kerri Burke (Saugus, MA) became the first junior to earn captainship honors when she was named a captain during her junior season in 2005-06.
"These two players exemplify, both on and off the floor, what the Sacred Heart University basketball program has been built on," commented Coach Swanson. "Their work ethic in the gym, in the classroom and in the community sets the standard we hope all our players will reach for. There is no doubt in my mind that their leadership will help this program grow to new heights."
The Pioneer backcourt duo helped lead Sacred Heart to the 2009 Northeast Conference Championship and their second berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Pioneers became just the third team in league history to go 18-0 in the regular season on the way to a championship.
Apo's first two seasons in a Pioneer uniform have been among the best in Sacred Heart history and the Northeast Conference. Apo becomes only the second player in NEC history, joining Jess Zinobile of Saint Francis (PA), to follow up her NEC Rookie of the Year selection by winning the league's Player of the Year award the very next season. She led the team in scoring at 16.9 points per game and dished out 135 assists. Apo was one the NEC's top three-point threats, hitting 38.5% (60-156) from behind the arc. She set a new school record in 2008-09 at the free throw line hitting 83.2% (153-184) and she is currently the career free throw percentage leader (.808).
Cosgrove started 31 of the 33 games in 2008-09 and averaged 8.3 points per game, fourth on the team. Cosgrove also had over a hundred assists, topping out a 101 against just 77 turnovers. She was one of the NEC's top three-point shooter, hitting 39.4% (69-175) behind the arc. Her 69 three's ties the school record for three-point field goals in a season.
