Sacred Heart Establishes The Lisa M. Moray Memorial Scholarship Fund

Jan. 10, 2009

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (January 10, 2009) - The Sacred Heart Department of Athletics is proud to honor the memory of former women's basketball player Lisa Moray with the creation of the Lisa M. Moray Memorial Scholarship.

Prior to this afternoon's Northeast Conference game with Robert Morris, Lisa's parents, Walter and Donna, and the Moray family were present as SHU Director of Athletics Don Cook, head coach Ed Swanson, over 20 women's basketball alumnae-many of whom played with Lisa, and this year's team were on hand to make the announcement.

Lisa, a four-year member of the women's basketball program, passed away this past June as the result of being a passenger in an automobile accident near her home in Hopewell Junction, New York. Lisa was a key member of the 2006 NEC championship team that delivered a school-record 26 wins and a first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament. She finished her career with 160 three-point field goals, a mark that ranks her third all-time at Sacred Heart. A year later she set a new school record for three's in a season knocking down 69 on the year. This season, the Pioneers are wearing Lisa's number 11 on their jerseys in remembrance of their fallen teammate.

The Lisa M. Moray Memorial Scholarship has been established by her family, teammates, friends and members of the University community to honor Lisa's legacy at Sacred Heart and her indelible spirit. As a four-year member of the women's basketball team, Lisa was a competitor distinguished by her deep commitment to sportsmanship, teamwork and the Sacred Heart community. This fund will assist deserving female student-athletes who embody these attributes, show academic promise and demonstrate financial need.

Pioneer head coach Ed Swanson presented Walter and Donna Moray with Lisa's red #11 jersey. No future Pioneer will wear her number 11 as long as Ed Swanson is the head coach at Sacred Heart University.
