FAIRFIELD, Conn. (December 20, 2008) - The Rhode Island women's basketball team got 20 points apiece from Tanja Licina and Megan Shoniker as the Rams outscored Sacred Heart 32-15 in the second half en route to a 62-40 win Saturday afternoon in the William H. Pitt Center. The Rams used a 10-0 run to open the second half, forcing 11 turnovers and holding SHU to just 25.9% (7-27) shooting over the final 20 minutes to seal the win. Senior Kaitlin Sowinski (Hopkinton, RI) posted her second-straight double double finishing with a team-high 19 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
Sacred Heart (4-6) played well in the early going, building a 10-point lead 10 minutes in, 24-14, thanks to the hot hand of sophomore Maggie Cosgrove (Andover, MA) who hit three three-point field goals in the first half. With SHU up 28-18 at the 7:50 mark, the Rams used the rest of the first half to start finding some offensive rhythm, outscoring SH, 12-7 to trail just 35-30 at the break.
Rhode Island (5-5) started their 10-0 run to start the second half on a Licina lay-up followed by a Lindsay Harris jumper and a Shoniker three to take the lead 37-35 lead. Sierra Cooper made it a 39-35 lead with a three-point play. The Ram lead hit double digits at the 8:28 mark on a Licina lay-in, 52-41. From there, SHU was able to cut the lead to single digits twice, on a freshman Callan Taylor (Overland Park, KS) three at 8:08 and a Sowinski lay-up at 7:14, 54-46. From there, the Rams coasted home on a 16-6 run to end the game.
Sowinski finished eight-of-15 at the free throw line but hit just three-of-nine at the free throw line. Cosgrove scored all of her nine points in the first half, and had four assists but turned it over seven times.
The Pioneers shot five-of-10 from behind the arc in the first half but managed just one-of-10 during the second stanza. SHU was also hurt by 11 second half turnovers, leading to 10 Ram points at the other end.
Licina and Shoniker combined to shoot 17-of-33 on the afternoon to lead all scorers. Shoniker made four-of-eight from behind the arc. The Rams held the rebounding edge 42-32 and shot 45.8% (27-59) in the win.
Sacred Heart will return to the court on Sunday, December 28th when they travel to Villanova. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 pm.
