Final Stats

FAIRFIELD, CT (December 4, 2007) - The Sacred Heart women's basketball team got matching double doubles from juniors Katilin Sowinski (Hopkinton, RI) and Stephanie Ryan (Coram, NY) but it wasn't enough as the Pioneers fell at the hand of Dartmouth College, 53-50, Wednesday night. Sowinski finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds with six blocks while Ryan notched her first career double dip with 10 points and 11 boards as SHU fell to 3-4 on the season with the loss.

The Pioneers (3-4) jetted out to a seven point lead midway through the first half and used an 8-2 run late in the half to take their biggest lead of the game, 29-21, with 4:58 on the clock. From there, however, the SHU offense went into a funk for the rest of the first half, missing last six shots while turning it over five times before the halftime horn. In the process, the Big Green took full advantage and ran off six-straight points to trail by just two, 29-27, at the break.

Dartmouth (1-5) built on their momentum from the first half and grabbed the lead back, 32-31, on a Brittany Smith lay-0up with 15:47 to go. The two teams traded the lead back and forth four more times, sitting at 44-44 with seven minutes to go when it looked like SHU might pull away. After Dartmouth grabbed the lead with a Michelle Meyer lay-in, senior Lisa Moray (Hopewell Junction, NY) buried a three and Sowinski laid one in off a feed from Khalia Cain (Manchester, CT) to put the Pioneers up 49-46 with 4:37 on the clock.

Sowinski's bucket proved to be the Pioneer's last field goal of the night as the Big Green stormed back. Dartmouth's Kristen Craft pulled her team to within one on a pair of free throws at 2:02 while Sowinski had a chance to put Sacred Heart back up by three at the free throw line; she made just one of two as SHU led 50-48 with 1:34 to go. The Big Green went back to Craft and the senior delivered, getting to the hoop for a lay-up and a foul, sinking the free throw for the three-point play and a 51-50 lead.

The Pioneers had two chances to take back the lead but Moray missed a three and Cain missed a long jumper on SHU's next possession but both resulted in offensive team rebounds for SHU. Moray looked to get the ball inside to Sowinski with 19 ticks left, but her pass was deflected and stolen. Dartmouth's Koren Schram hit a pair of free throws to give her team a three-point advantage and SHU's last second three-point try by Moray missed the mark to seal the win for the Big Green.

Dartmouth got 15 points from Craft who also picked up four steals in the win. Despite shooting just 32.8% (19-58), the Big Green outrebounded Sacred Heart 39-38, including 21-16 in the second half, while hitting 11 of 17 at the free throw line.

The Pioneers shot 36.4% (20-55) in the game but went to the line just eight times, hitting five. SHU was also plagued by turnovers, committing 19 miscues in the loss.

In addition to Ryan's 10 points and 11 rebounds, she added five steals, a block and a steal to her totals.

Sacred Heart will open the Northeast Conference portion of their schedule on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Monmouth for a 3:00 pm tip.
