FAIRFIELD, CT (November 21, 2006) - The Brown University women's basketball team used 29 points from senior Ashley King-Bischof to overcome a 31-28 Sacred Heart lead at the half on the way to a 70-63 win Tuesday night. The Pioneers were outscored 42-32 in the second half as they fall to 1-3 to start the year. The Bears picked up their first win and are now 1-3 themselves.
For the second straight game the Pioneers got out to a hot start and built a double digit lead seven minutes in. Junior Lisa Moray (Hopewell Junction, NY) buried three of her career high seven three's to help SHU open a 16-6 lead at the 13:08 mark. SHU's lead held at ten, 20-10, with 7:30 left in the half when Brown used an 11-0 run over the next two minutes to take their first lead. King-Bischof finished off the run with a three-point play at 4:53 to give the Bears a 21-20 lead.
Another three ball from Moray put the Pioneers back in front by two before a 7-1 Brown spurt gave the Bears their biggest lead of the half, 28-24 with 1:19 on the clock. SHU got a jumper from freshman Lindsey Gibson (Mechanicville, NY) along with a pair of free throws and another three from Moray to close the half on with seven-straight points to take a 31-29 lead. Moray's 17 points at the half put her just one off her career-mark with the second half to play.
SHU went up by five at the start of the half but handed the lead back to Brown again after a pair of three's from King-Bischof and Megan McCahill a minute in. A three point play from sophomore Kaitlin Sowinski (Hopkinton, RI) produced another lead change and she capped a 9-2 run at the 15:36 mark with another hoop and the foul to give the Pioneers a seven-point lead, 43-38.
Brown again refused to go away and chipped away at the Pioneer lead with the two teams trading the lead seven more times through the 2:48 mark when the Bears took the lead for good. A pair of Sowinski free throws put SHU up 63-62 with 3:11 left. A missed Brown jumper from Annesley O'Neal was chased down by Ashley Alexander who converted the put back that put her team up, 64-63 with 2:48 to play and the Bears never looked back.
SHU sophomore Khalia Cain (Manchester, CT) went to the free throw line with a chance to put the Pioneers back ahead on the next possession but both her shots missed the mark. The Pioneers would miss their last four shots of the game while a Courtney Lee lay-up for Brown and four-of-four at the free throw line in the closing seconds iced the game away, 70-63.
Moray finished the game with a career-high 23 points, shooting seven-of-12 from behind the three-point arc. Sowinski put up 21 points, making 13-of-14 at the charity stripe, both career-high marks. As a team, the Pioneers turned the ball over 18 times and shot just 31.6% (18-57) from the field. SHU did hit 20-of-25 at the free throw line in the losing cause.
Brown's King-Bischof shot 11-of-17 from the field and pulled down eight rebounds. The Bears shot 48.3% (29-60) and outscored SHU in the paint 30-20.
