FAIRFIELD, Conn. (February 2, 2009) - The Sacred Heart women's basketball team set a new Division I record shooting 60.9% (28-46) from the field as the Pioneers earned their 10th-striaght victory Monday night beating St. Francis (NY), 75-44. The Pioneers improved to 11-0 in the Northeast Conference, their best start since joining the league in 1999-00. Freshman Callan Taylor (Overland Park, KS) just missed a double double with a game-high 16 points and nine rebounds.
Sacred Heart (14-7, 11-0 NEC) took control right out of the gates bolting in front 11-0 five minutes in as Maggie Cosgrove (Andover, MA) buried a pair of three's on SHU's early run. The Terriers broke into the scoring column at 14:40 on a Kendra Williams lay-in but couldn't slow down the Pioneers as SHU ran their lead to 15, 27-12, over the next five minutes.
The Pioneers led by as many 20 during the first 20 minutes of action but were plagued by turnovers for much of the first half. SHU shot a blistering 60.9% (14-23) from the field in the first half but had 12 turnovers on the ledger at the halftime horn.
The Terriers (3-18, 2-9 NEC) were only able to cut the lead to down to 12 at the 14 minute mark before the Pioneers left no doubt putting the game away with a 14-3 run over the next six minutes. After a Kara Ayers lay-up at 8:20 cut the SHU lead to 20, 53-33, the Pioneers ended the game outscoring the Terriers 20-11 the rest of the way.
Despite posting 27 turnovers, their second highest total on the year and their highest in NEC play, the Pioneers overcame their miscues with some lethal shooting. In addition to their 60.9% shooting from the field, SHU hit 61.5% (8-13) from behind the arc and 73.3% (11-15) at the line in the win. The last time a Pioneer team hit for 60% in a game was February 11, 1998 against UMass-Lowell (.639).
SHU dominated in the paint, outscoring the Terriers 32-18. Taylor's night ended with the rookie standout hitting six-of-eight from the field on her way to 16 points. Senior Kaitlin Sowinski (Hopkinton, RI) finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and six blocks in the win. Sophomore Alisa Apo (Freehold, NJ) tallied 13 points with three assists.
Sophomore Maureen Reilly (Cherry Hill, NJ) scored four points and matched her career-high with eight rebounds with three blocks off the bench.
Sacred Heart is back in action this Saturday, February 7th when they play host to Long Island University in game one of a doubleheader with the SHU men's team.
