HACKENSACK, NJ (January 25, 2006) - Junior Amanda Pape (Stamford, CT) scored a game-high 22 points and freshman Kaitlin Sowinski (Hopkinton, RI) tallied a career-high 14 points to lead the Sacred Heart Pioneers to a 76-55 win at Fairleigh Dickinson Wednesday night. The win runs the Pioneers' winning streak to 10-straight, tying the school record for consecutive victories and improves their record to 16-2 overall and 9-0 in the Northeast Conference.
Pape had a big first half for the Pioneers, hitting five of eight for 11 points. SHU was sloppy with the ball, turning it over 10 times in the first 20 minutes but 17 trips to the free throw line where they made 13, helped the Pioneers to a 10-point, 39-29, lead at the break.
The Knights used a quick run to start the second half to cut the Pioneers lead to three, 39-36, three and a half minutes. Mercedez Walker hit a jumper and a free throw and Shanay Freeman nailed a pair from the win as the Knights hit for the first seven points of the half.
The Pioneers were able to respond used a 19-6 run to open up a 58-42 lead with just over 11 minutes to play and then used a 13-6 jaunt to put the game away going up 71-49, with just over four minutes to play.
In addition to her 22 points, Pape finished with six rebounds and tied her season-high with six assists. Sowinski added six boards to her game totals along with a pair of blocked shots.
As a team, SHU shot 43.5% from the floor and hit 20-of-31 at the free throw line.
FDU, now 4-11 and 1-6 in the league, got a double double from Jennifer Walkling with 15 points and 10 boards. Krissy Suckow added 13 in the loss. The Knights shot just 46.7% at the line, hitting 14-of-30.
The Pioneers return to the hardwood on Monday, January 30th when they travel to Long Island University for a 7 pm tip.
