FAIRFIELD, CT - Sophomore Jasmine Walker (Amityville, NY) recorded her first double-double of the season with 13 points and ten rebounds and freshman Lisa Moray (Hopewell Junction, NY) had a career-high 12 points, all on three-pointers, to lead Sacred Heart University to a 60-48 Northeast Conference women's basketball win over visiting Central Connecticut State University Thursday night.
The win was made more significant for the Pioneers because they played the bulk of the game without junior Nicolle Rubino (Port Jefferson Station, NY), who suffered a contusion on her forehead in the first half and sat out the remainder of the game. This game also marked the return of senior guard Allie Bagnell (Newtown, PA), who had missed the last ten games after injuring her knee at Kansas.
The Pioneers, 6-7 overall and 3-1 in the NEC, jumped out to a 5-0 lead on layup by Walker and a three-pointer by Moray. Central Connecticut rode a pair of threes by junior Kim Boone to take an 8-7 lead 5:30 into the game. Colleen White (Richboro, PA) answered for Sacred Heart, but a foul by Walker and pair of free throws by sophomore forward Krystal Coke for the Blue Devil put CCSU back up.
A three by senior Aisha Williams gave the Blue Devils their biggest lead of the first half at 17-13 with 12:06 to play. The wheels then came off the Central bus. The Blue Devils missed their next nine shots and turned the ball over six time as the Pioneers went on a 9-0 run to take a 22-17 lead with 8:36 remaining in the half. That lead would hold until a foul line jumper by Gabriella Guegbelet put in the first Blue Devil points in six minutes.
Central, 3-9 overall and 2-2 in the conference, clawed its way back and a layup by Coke with 2:33 left in the half tied the game at 24-24. Sacred Heart took a 30-24 lead by scoring the next six points on free throws by sophomores Kerri Burke (Saugus, MA) and Amanda Pape (Stamford, CT) and a layup off a steal by Burke. Sophomore April Jackson (Norwalk, CT) hit a bucket with 1:01 left to send Central into the intermission trailing 30-26.
The two teams traded baskets at the start of the second half and a Guegbelet basket with 16:53 to play had the Blue Devils within two, before the Pioneers went on a 7-0 run to take a 39-30 lead. A layup by Pape extended the Pioneer lead to 41-31 with 12:08 left.
CCSU then had its first extended run of the game, scoring the next seven points and a Brittney Dixon jumper with 10:15 to play had the Blue Devils back within three at 41-38. Central would get no closer the remainder of the game. A xxxxxxxx bucket had CCSU within five at 50-45, but a Moray triple with 5:05 left took the final wind out of the Blue Devil sails and the Pioneers cruised from there.
White tied Walker for the game scoring honors, also chipping in 13 points. Pape also finished in double figures with ten points.
Boone was the lone Central player to record double figures in scoring with 11 points.
The Pioneers hit the road for their next game, playing the front end of a doubleheader with the men's basketball team at 2:00 p.m. at St. Francis College of Brooklyn on Saturday.
