Pioneers Fall In WNIT Opener

Queens, N.Y.- The Sacred Heart womens basketball team would drop a 72-43 game to the St. John Red Storm in the opening round of the WNIT. Hannah Kimmel would lead SHU in her final game of her career posting her 33rd career double-double. The Pioneers close out their season 17-15.

 

Despite winning the opening tip, the Red Storm were first to get on the board, but Kimmel was right there on the next possession to tie it up at two a piece. St. Johns would open things up, going on a 6-0 run but Kimmel would drive to the basket to add a layup on her own at the 4:31 mark. Shelby Hickey would hit her first points of the day, to put SHU within one, as the score stood 11-10 with 1:20 left in the first. Adaysha Williams would add a last second lay up to close out the first quarter with the score 16-12.

Erin Storck picked things up for SHU in the second as she added a slick layup past a defender. The Red Storm found their shot as they went on a 5-0 run. Katherine Haines slid by a defender to break the run as the score stood 23-18 with 3:04 remaining. Hickey hits a big triple to close the Red Storm lead, closing in on the end of the second quarter. Williams yet again drives to the basket to pick up the last second layup and move the score to 27-25 to end the half.

Kimmel continued to put points up for SHU adding a pair of jumpers after two scoreless minutes in the third, Sacred Heart would still find themselves trailing 34-29 at 6:46. The Red Storm shooting began to catch fire as they moved the score to 44-31, till a Kimmel jumper would help SHU out. The Red Storm would outscore SHU 29-9 in the third quarter as the score stood 56-34 going to the final quarter

St. Johns would pick things up where they left off hitting back-to-back layups. Haines would add a layup of her own. The Johnnies Jade Walker added a couple jumpers to extend the St. Johns lead 66-40 with 6:00 remaining. SHU would go on to fall to St. Johns 72-43.

 
 
 

Noteworthy-

  • Kimmel would close out her final game with her 6th double-double of the season and 33rd in her career, as she finished the night with 13 points, and 14 boards
