FAIRFIELD, CONN. (January 27, 2014)—The Sacred Heart women's basketball team remains undefeated at home in Northeast Conference play as Gabrielle Washington's 27 points led the Pioneers over the Bryant Bulldogs 84-78. Junior Katie Shepard (Lone Tree, Colo.) tallied a career-high 22 points as SHU improves to 9-10 on the season and 6-2 in conference.
Getting the ball off the tip, Bryant's Meredith Soper laid in the first basket sparking a 9-3 run to open the game, as Shepard landed a triple for Sacred Heart's first score.
Capping off a six-point SHU run, Washington cut Bryant's lead to just one point midway through the first half. After missing a three, the junior snagged her own rebound and landed a jumper to bring the Pioneers up to 19-18.
Shepard knocked down a shot from downtown sparking a 9-2 Sacred Heart run, in which Washington gave the Pioneers their first lead of the game, 23-22, landing a jumper with 8:50 remaining in the first half.
The teams exchanged points in the final minutes, tying the score three times to head into halftime tied at 33.
Sacred Heart opened the second half with three triples as part of an 11-4 run, which forced Bryant Head Coach Mary Burke to call a timeout. The Pioneers tacked on another four points in the minute following the timeout improving SHU's lead to nine points and causing another Bulldog timeout.
The Pioneers maintained the lead throughout the second half, continually expanding the gap. With an Adaysha Williams (LaCrosse, Wis.) lay-in, Sacred Heart's lead reached its peak of 17 points.
SHU wraps up the home stand Saturday, Feb. 1 at 2:00 p.m. when they host the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights.
