Consecutive 30-point Performances Earns Washington NEC Player of the Week

Gabrielle Washington (Mesa, Ariz.) became the first NEC player to post back-to-back 30-point performances this season, and she did it during the opening week of conference play earning her second Choice Hotels Northeast Conference Player of the Week Award. The third-year Pioneer poured in 35 points to power Sacred Heart past Saint Francis U on Jan. 4 and threw in another 32 to spearhead a triumphant effort against Robert Morris on Jan. 6. Arguably even more impressive was the 5-foot-9 guard's performance on the glass. Washington, who leads SHU in rebounding (5.8 rpg) this season, recorded double-doubles in both NEC victories. She totaled 10 rebounds against SFU and pulled in another 15 caroms against RMU. Despite the high volume of touches she had, Washington committed only two turnovers while averaging 33.5 points and 12.5 rebounds over the two-game span. After producing an 0-for-3 clip from three-point range in Sacred Heart's final non-conference contest (76-75 win over Maine on Dec. 29), Washington warmed up from long distance in a hurry once the New Year began. She made 11 of 24 attempts (.458) from beyond the arc against the NEC's Keystone State contingent.
