PISCATAWAY, N.J. (December 15, 2013)—Katie Shepard (Lone Tree, Colo.) posted a career-high 16 points as the Sacred Heart women's basketball team fell to Rutgers 71-51 in the RAC Sunday afternoon. Junior guard Shepard led the Pioneers offensively shooting 55.6% (5-for-9) from the floor and 57.1% (4-for-7) from beyond the arc. The loss drops SHU to 2-7 on the season, and marks the first time the Pioneers have dropped five straight games since the 2008-09 season.
The Scarlet Knights continued to put points on the board, scoring on almost every possession in the half, as Sacred Heart was having trouble getting shots off turning the ball over 11 times in the opening period.
Despite battling hard, Sacred Heart was not able to catch the strong Rutgers team and went into halftime down 35-23.
Sacred Heart was held scoreless once again to open the second half; this time for nine minutes as Rutgers went on a 19-point offensive spurt. Shelby Hickey (Littleton, Colo.) got the Pioneer offense started with a pair of foul shots at the 11:10 mark. The freshman went on to drain a three minutes later cutting the Scarlet Knights' lead to 62-37 by the 7:34 media timeout.
Unfortunately, it was too late as the damage was already done and the Pioneers were unable to catch up before the final buzzer.
Sacred Heart returns home Saturday, Dec. 21 at 2:00 p.m. to kick-off a four-game home stand against the Hartford Hawks.
