Women's Hoops Picked Second in Preseason Poll; Washington Named to Preseason Team

BROOKLYN, N.Y (October 22, 2013)—The Sacred Heart women's basketball team was picked second in the 2013-14 Northeast Conference Preseason Poll that was announced Tuesday afternoon at the Barclay Center as part of NEC Social Media Day after receiving three first place votes. In addition to the poll announcement, junior guard Gabrielle Washington (Mesa, Ariz.) was named to the Preseason Team.

Last season, SHU earned the No. 2 seed in the NEC Championship with a 13-5 conference record, but fell in the semi-final to Saint Francis U 83-67. After a successful 21-9 regular season, the Pioneers finished 2012-13 with their first WNIT appearance in program history against Boston University on March 21. It was a tough game, and Sacred Heart lost the battle to the Bulldogs 61-49.

Washington, who finished third in the league in scoring averaging 16.7 points per game in 2012-13, joins Naana Ankoma-Mensa of Bryant, Sydney Henderson of Mount St. Mary's, Artemis Spanou of Robert Morris and Ali Williams of Saint Francis U on this year's Preseason Team. Her 91.0 free throw percentage ranked seventh in the country and first in the league. The former NEC Rookie of the Year recorded 11 20-plus point performances in her sophomore campaign, and only had two games where she did not reach double-digit scoring.

The Pioneers open the season on November 8 at home in the William H. Pitt Center against St. John's at 7:00 p.m.
