(Fairfield, CT) - SAAC is once again sponsoring the Student-Athlete Date Auction to honor the lives of those Pioneer student athletes who have passed away since moving to the Division I level.
The first three annual auctions benefited the Lisa Moray Scholarship Fund, when more than 35 student athletes representing 32 teams were auctioned off to participate with the winning bidder in group date events that have included a bingo night at a local restaurant, a bowling night, and a movie night.
The event not only raised money for this special scholarship fund, but also began as a way to help honor the life of Sacred Heart Women’s Basketball alum Lisa Moray (‘08) by raising seatbelt awareness. Moray, a beloved student athlete in her four years at SHU, tragically died weeks after her 2008 graduation in an automobile accident.
With the first three years raising the $25,000 necessary for the creation of the scholarship, SAAC used the 2012 Student Athlete Auction to raise money to buy seats at Pioneer Park - the brand new home of SHU Softball - in the names of the four other former Pioneer athletes who have passed away since SHU moved to the Division I level in 1999. They include Chauncey Hardy (Men’s Basketball, ‘10), Eric Hernandez (Football, ’02), Jason Jarrett (Football, ‘03), and Patricia Dacey-Woods (Women’s Tennis, ‘02).
About 400-500 students traditionally attend the event, paying five dollars for a bidding paddle in the hopes of being the highest bidder to go on the group date with a particular student athlete.
