Luis German (Southampton, NY) was named the Northeast Conference athlete of the week after taking 17th place at the New England Championships this weekend held in Boston, MA. German crossed the tape in 25:09 breaking the SHU record held by teammate John Kenworthy (Gloversville, NY). Both teams ran well in a field featuring over 300 runners from 45 schools, the women finished in 16th and the men took home 18th place.
German and Kenworthy both claimed All New England honors, becoming the first two Sacred Heart men to win the award. Kenworthy ran an impressive 25:17 in his 24th place finish. The time also broke the previous school record which Kenworthy set just two weeks ago. Richard Marcello (Foster, RI) was again the Pioneers top freshman runner clocking in at 27:17. Brendan Rickert (Danbury, CT), Andrew Houghtalen (West Charlton, NJ), and Ryan Murdoch (Salem, CT) also finished for the Pioneers securing an 18th place finish.
The women’s cross country team also recorded a first as 8 runners posted times of under 20 minutes. The program had never seen more than 6 runners accomplish this feat. Mekenzie Krause (Bennington, VT) continued her impressive freshman campaign posting a 65th place finish with a time of 19:00.
