FAIRFIELD, Conn. (October 13, 2009) - Sacred Heart juniors Kimberly DeLoreto (Hillsdale, NJ) and Andrew Houghtalen (West Charlton, NY) were named the Road Runner Northeast Conference Cross Country Athlete's of the Week announced by the league office on Tuesday.
Earning her second weekly honor in as many weeks, DeLoreto notched her third straight top-five finish and was the first NEC runner to cross the line at the New England Championships on Oct. 10. The junior clocked in at 18:10 to take fifth place in a field of 327 harriers from 49 institutions en-route to receiving All-New England honors for the second time in her career since taking 22nd as a freshman in 2007. A native of Hillsdale, NJ, DeLoreto's fifth-place performance marked the best-ever finish by a Pioneer in the race, besting the 12th-place effort of Katie Wrinkle recorded in 2003. Her time (18:10) is also a program-best on the 5K Franklin Park course in Boston, MA, topping the 18:14 recorded by Kathleen Henry in 2006. After redshirting last fall, DeLoreto now has four top-five finishes in her career.
Pacing the Pioneers for the third time this fall, Houghtalen ran in the 47-team New England Championships on Oct. 10, clocking in at 25:19 on the 8K Franklin Park Course in Boston, MA. The junior's time earned 23rd place overall in a field of 320 runners, marking the top finish among NEC competitors. Houghtalen's performance resulted in the first All-New England honor of his career, while the Road Runner Sports NEC Athlete of the Week nod is his second of 2009.
The duo lead the Pioneers this Saturday, October 17th at the University at Albany Invitational.
